It’s not uncommon for people to imagine hitting an elected official, but actually doing so can have serious consequences. One Frenchman turned this thought into action recently.
French President Emmanuel Macron visited a culinary institute to celebrate the reopening of indoor dining after COVID-19 restrictions. While greeting the crowd, a man slapped Macron in the face and shouted anti-Macron slogans. Security intervened, and Macron was safely escorted away.
Two individuals were arrested, one for the assault and the other for undisclosed reasons. French Prime Minister Jean Castex condemned the violence, calling for a reaffirmation of democratic values.
Despite the incident, Macron remains committed to reopening the dining industry. Indoor dining will resume soon, with curfews extending to 11:00 PM. All COVID restrictions are expected to be lifted by the end of June, depending on the pandemic situation and vaccination progress.
“A new chapter begins tomorrow,” Macron announced on Twitter. “Life will return across our land, bringing back our culture and way of living.”
