BTS Gives Speech to UN General Assembly

Speaking as an outsider looking in on the whole BTS sensation, I can’t deny that the sheer gumption of their fanbase is the stuff of miracles. Those seven young lads have a globe-spanning fanbase that’s not only ready and willing to sing their praises at the drop of a hat, but it’s that very ubiquity that’s helped to escalate the group to a household name. So great is their star power, that they got a chance to speak in front of one of the most exclusive audiences in the entire world: the United Nations General Assembly.

Earlier today, all seven members of BTS stood in front of the UN General Assembly to give a passionate speech on their experiences in the world as we currently know it, as well as what it’s currently like to be a young adult. Their appearance at the Assembly was thanks to their recent appointment as a “special presidential envoy for future generations and culture,” by South Korean President Moon Jae-in. The members spoke in support of the power of online interconnectivity and communities, which was rather fittingly backed up by the live chat in the UN’s official YouTube stream. The stream chat was absolutely inundated with over a million BTS fans cheering the members on and echoing their sentiments.

The members expressed hopes that their generation would be remembered in the future for their ability to come together as a community, even when separated by physical distance and circumstances like the COVID-19 pandemic. “I’ve heard that people in their teens and 20s today are being referred to as covid’s lost generation,” said RM. “I think it’s a stretch to say they’re lost, just because the path they tread can’t be seen by grown-up eyes.”
