CD Projekt Red Refuses to Abandon ‘Cyberpunk 2077’

Full disclosure: I am not one of the people that followed the development of CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 all the way through its tortured process. Honestly, I didn’t even know it existed until they marched Keanu Reeves out on stage. But when it released, I decided I had nothing better to do, so I bought it and resolved to give it the ol’ college try. I played through the whole story campaign, beginning to end, though the game fought me the whole way through with weird design choices and copious bugs. When I beat it, I said “well, that sure was a game,” and didn’t pay it much more mind. CDPR, on the other hand, isn’t willing to let their brainchild fizzle out without the fanfare it feels it deserves.

In a recent interview with Reuters, CDPR executive Adam Kicinski affirmed his and the company’s intent to fix all of Cyberpunk 2077‘s issues so it can be the major smash hit they always wanted it to be, and that failure is not an option. “I don’t see an option to shelve Cyberpunk 2077,” Kicinski said. “We are convinced that we can bring the game to such a state that we can be proud of it and therefore successfully sell it for years to come.”

But while Cyberpunk 2077 has been out for a while and CDPR has released a few patches, their relationship with the playerbase, as well as their own investors, is still very rocky. Sony, which pulled the game from the PlayStation Store and offered refunds to users, still hasn’t reinstated the PS4 version, which means the currently in-development PS5 port may run into some issues down the line. Of course, putting in this much overtime for the game may present some problems in itself, given the controversies surrounding the crunch periods developers were forced to endure to get it out. Only time will tell if Cyberpunk 2077 will rise majestically from its own discarded carcass, or if it’ll just stay there and rot.
