Christopher Walken has Never Owned a Cell Phone

The idea that someone could even be living in society right now without technological aid is completely foreign to me. Computers and phones have become so deeply tied to the lives and livelihoods of myself and almost everyone I know that if they were to all spontaneously disappear one day, I wouldn’t know what to do. Should that hypothetical event occur, however, I can now name at least one person who wouldn’t be affected at all: Christopher Walken.

Walken appeared on The Late Show the other day for an interview with the show’s host, Stephen Colbert, to talk about his new movie, Wild Mountain Thyme. However, in the interest of pandemic safety, Colbert has held all of his recent interviews remotely via Zoom, including this one. For most celebs, this isn’t a problem, but for Walken, it took a little extra doing.

“Somebody had to come and set this up because I don’t have a cellphone or a computer,” Walken said, admitting that he had never owned either kind of device in his life.

When Colbert questioned him as to why he doesn’t use electronics, Walken said “I just got to it too late. I think I’m right at a certain age where it just passed me by. And I never got involved in it because it would be strange to have any 10-year-old be much better at it than I am.” He added that cell phones are similar to watches, in that “if you need one, somebody else has got it.”

The only time Walken ever even holds a phone is when he’s on the job, though even then he doesn’t pay it much mind. “Sometimes on a movie they’ll give me a cell phone, but it’s more so that they can find me… like a tracking collar. If I want to use it, someone has to dial it for me, that kind of thing,” he said.
