Back in 1985, Coca-Cola faced backlash when it introduced “New Coke,” changing the formula of its classic drink. The move did not go down well with consumers, leading to the reintroduction of the original Coke as “Coke Classic.” This historical event has made any changes to Coke’s formulas since then a matter of scrutiny, including its variations.
This week, Coca-Cola announced that Coke Zero Sugar would be undergoing changes in its formula and packaging. Rafael Prandini, Coca-Cola’s North America category lead, stated, “Recognizing evolving tastes and preferences, we aim to continuously improve and offer fans the best-tasting Coca-Cola with zero sugar or calories, presented in iconic packaging and supported by innovative marketing efforts.”
CEO James Quincey acknowledged that while Coca-Cola Zero Sugar has been successful, it still represents a small portion of the brand. He mentioned that the updated recipe aims to align the taste closer to the original Coca-Cola, based on consumer feedback and the company’s commitment to enhancement.
However, initial feedback from early tasters of the new Coke Zero Sugar indicates a negative response to the changes.
The new version of Coke Zero in Europe is disappointing, much like New Coke. I’ve stopped drinking it.

I don’t drink soda anymore, but I’m upset they changed the one I liked. pic.com/SEgxBPfZZZ

@CocaCola has ruined my favorite drink Coke Zero Sugar. The new recipe is terrible. I won’t be buying it until you bring back the old flavor.

It remains to be seen if the backlash will prompt Coca-Cola to reintroduce a “Coca-Cola Zero Sugar Classic” version.
