Company Sues Meta for Taking their Name

Last year, social media giant Facebook officially changed its name to Meta in an effort to better reflect CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s burgeoning interest in the so-called “metaverse.” Despite the change, though, the platform and company is still commonly referred to by its old moniker, and there’s one particular company that would prefer they go back to it completely.

Earlier this week, an installation art company also named Meta (differentiated as announced that they would be suing Meta for coopting their name and violating the trademark set by their company’s brand.

“On October 28, 2021, Facebook seized our META mark and name, which we put our blood, sweat, and tears into building for over twelve years,” wrote on their official website. “Today, after eight months of trying to negotiate with Facebook in good faith to no avail, we were left with no choice but to file a lawsuit against them.”

According to’s complaint, Meta’s branding has made it much more difficult for them to secure business, as the reputation from multiple Facebook scandals has made the public distrustful of the name. “Meta can no longer provide goods and services under the META mark,” the complaint argues, “because consumers are likely to mistakenly believe that Meta’s goods and services emanate from Facebook and that Meta is associated with the toxicity that is inextricably linked with Facebook.”

At the time of writing, Meta has not commented on the matter.
