As of this week, about half of the total US population has received at least one dose of the three available COVID-19 vaccines, with approximately 40% fully vaccinated. Progress is being made, but reaching President Joe Biden’s target of 70% with at least one shot by July 4 remains uncertain.
Various major companies have been providing incentives for vaccinations to motivate those who are hesitant. These incentives range from simple rewards like free donuts to larger initiatives such as statewide lotteries. The newest addition to this incentive trend is CVS, who is introducing a unique sweepstakes campaign.
From June 1 to July 10, CVS will conduct the “One Step Closer” sweepstakes. Individuals who schedule and receive one or both vaccine shots at a CVS pharmacy will have the chance to win one of 1,000 different prizes. The prizes are diverse and enticing, including tickets to the 2022 Super Bowl, a $5,000 prize for a post-pandemic family reunion, and even passes for a Norwegian Cruise Line.

CVS aims to address vaccine hesitancy through this initiative, especially as recent CDC surveys reveal that around 17% of adults aged 18 and above are hesitant to get vaccinated.
Despite the perceived light-heartedness of such incentives, they have proven effective. Ohio, for instance, has launched a state-wide lottery with a $1 million prize for vaccinated individuals, resulting in a significant 45% increase in vaccination rates according to local government data.
