The Ever Given, the infamous cargo vessel that blocked the Suez Canal in March, causing a global shipping delay, sustained significant damage during the incident. Recently released images from Qingdao, China, show the extent of the damage incurred while the ship was lodged in the canal.

The photos reveal that the bow, the lower front part of the ship, was severely damaged as it scraped along the sides of the canal. Canal authorities’ efforts to free the vessel led to extensive tearing and removal of steel, resulting in the need for a complete replacement of the lower bow section.

“They will cut out that entire area and replace it with the new one they have fabricated,” explained Dr. Salvatore R. Mercogliano, an expert in maritime history.

Additionally, the cleanup process involved removing nearly 1 million cubic feet of debris, such as sand and mud, from various parts of the vessel. The Ever Given spent around six days in port for repairs and is likely either en route back to its destination or has already reached it.
