Delaware Governor John Carney has announced the official end of the state’s universal indoor mask mandate on February 11. Following this decision, the school mask mandate in the state will be lifted on March 31.
“We’re in a much better place than we were several weeks ago in the middle of the Omicron surge of Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations,” Carney stated.
“I want to be clear about this point — COVID is still circulating in our communities. And the virus still poses a risk of serious illness, particularly among those who are not up to date on their vaccinations,” he added. “But we have the tools to keep ourselves and each other safe.”

The US Centers for Disease Control continues to recommend wearing face masks indoors, regardless of vaccination status, to prevent the spread of COVID-19. While masks have proven effective in slowing the spread of the virus indoors, many Americans are eager to move past the era of mandatory masking after two years. With no official guidance from the Biden administration on mandate timelines, local governments are taking the initiative to balance public safety with the preferences of their constituents.
