Demi Lovato Says She Became Exhausted Explaining the Use of “They/Them” Pronouns

Demi Lovato recently discussed her choice to stop using “they/them” pronouns, citing fatigue from constantly educating others on the matter. In an interview with GQ Spain, the singer expressed frustration about having to clarify her decision to use non-binary pronouns, ultimately leading her to go back to using “she/her” pronouns.

Lovato publicly announced her pronoun change in August 2022 when she updated her Instagram page. She further elaborated on her decision on the Spout podcast, revealing that her choice was influenced by internal factors, such as feeling more connected to her feminine side.

Experiencing a balance between masculine and feminine energies, Lovato described how she didn’t strictly identify as a woman or a man. She mentioned, “I just felt human. That’s what they/them is for me. It’s just about, like, feeling human at your core.” However, the constant need to educate others and justify her pronoun choice became draining.

While Lovato’s shift back to “she/her” pronouns might imply that there is still progress needed in society’s acceptance of non-binary and gender-fluid individuals, it’s essential to understand that her identity can still be non-binary, regardless of these pronouns. Lovato acknowledged that she sees herself as transcending the male and female binary, emphasizing the need for more choices and inclusivity in society.

The conversation around pronouns has gained significance in recent years, with advocates pushing for the use of preferred pronouns to honor and validate gender identities. However, as Lovato’s experience highlights, the responsibility of educating others often falls on individuals who identify outside the gender binary, adding to the emotional burden they already carry.

Lovato’s decision to step away from using “they/them” pronouns reminds us that pronoun choices can be dynamic, influenced by personal growth and self-discovery. It underscores the importance of fostering an environment where individuals can express their true selves without the need for constant explanation or scrutiny.

As society progresses, it is vital to prioritize education and awareness regarding gender identities and pronouns, ensuring that everyone feels acknowledged, respected, and included. Lovato’s journey reflects the ongoing challenges faced by non-binary and gender-fluid individuals, underscoring the necessity for empathy, understanding, and advancement towards genuine acceptance for all.
