The Electronic Entertainment Expo is an annual event that showcases the latest developments in the gaming industry, including game reveals and hardware updates. E3 2020 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading many companies to host separate presentations or release trailers independently. But this year, E3 is making a return in a different format.
Due to COVID-19 safety concerns, E3 2021 will be held entirely online. Instead of a physical convention, the event will feature a virtual portal connecting attendees to virtual exhibitor booths. These virtual booths will offer presentations, trailers, and other content from various game developers and publishers who typically participate in E3. The event will also include live streams, gameplay demos, and social features like forums and leaderboards. Confirmed participants include Nintendo, Xbox, Capcom, Konami, Ubisoft, Take-Two Interactive, and Warner Bros. Games. Sony’s involvement remains unclear.

In addition to accessing the online portal on a computer, attendees can use a dedicated E3 2021 app available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. The app will offer the same content as the portal, as well as mobile-friendly features like polls and featured Tweets. Broadcasts will also be available on E3’s Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook channels.
The event is scheduled to take place from June 12 to June 15. Preregistration for the event is free and will open later this month. Additionally, there will be a media access week starting on June 7, allowing press members to interact directly with developers and publishers for interviews and insights.
