‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ Sweeps Oscar Victories

The hit film won awards in seven different categories.

Sunday night was the 2023 Academy Awards, showcasing the very best in film for the past year. It was a thankfully drama-light ceremony compared to years past, and in fact, it was a pleasantly moving ceremony for one film in particular.

Hit film Everything Everywhere All At Once dominated the Oscars stage on Sunday, taking home seven awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Film Editing.

The winner of Best Actress, Michelle Yeoh, is also the very first woman of Asian heritage to win the award, something she took pride in in her acceptance speech. “For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this a beacon of hope and possibility. This is proof that, dream big and dreams do come true. And ladies don’t let anybody tell you you are ever past your prime,” she said.

The awards were also emotional for the Best Supporting Actor winner, Ke Huy Quan, who hadn’t appeared in any films since his last role in 1985’s The Goonies. “My journey started on a boat. I spent a year in a refugee camp. And somehow, I ended up here on Hollywood’s biggest stage,” he said. “They say stories like this only happen in the movies. I cannot believe it’s happening to me. This is the American dream!”

“Dreams are something you have to believe in. I almost gave up on mine,” Quan said through tears. “To all of you out there, please keep your dream alive.”
