The original The Matrix film from 1999 had a huge impact on the entertainment industry. While the storyline was complex, the film’s visual effects and action sequences influenced many movies and even comedy parodies for years to come. The last movie in the Matrix series was in 2003, but after a 14-year gap, a new installment is set to hit the screens this December.
Warner Bros. has just unveiled the first trailer for The Matrix: Resurrections, a fresh addition to the franchise helmed by Lana Wachowski. Lana, who previously co-directed and co-wrote the original trilogy with her sister Lilly, is taking the reins solo this time due to personal reasons on Lilly’s part.
The trailer gives a glimpse of Neo (played by Keanu Reeves), once again as Thomas Anderson, grappling with Matrix-like visions that challenge his perception of reality. Neo discovers that he is still trapped in the Matrix, a simulated reality, and must find a way to escape once more. Alongside him, Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) returns, and a new character resembling a youthful Morpheus, portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, steps into the spotlight, replacing Laurence Fishburne who did not reprise his role in this production.

“After all these years, to be going back to where it all started… back to the Matrix,” quotes Jonathan Groff, a new addition to the cast, in the trailer.
The Matrix: Resurrections is scheduled to premiere in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22. However, to watch it on HBO Max, viewers will need a subscription to the premium ad-free tier.
