George Clooney Dismisses Idea of Political Office

As celebrities have more crossover with the world of politics and politicians become more like celebrities, we’ve started to see more frequent instances of celebrities, actors especially, mulling genuine attempts at political office. Former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and former President Donald Trump have already set a precedent for entertainment personalities in public office, and both Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Matthew McConaughey are on the record considering runs in the near future.

One actor that political rumors have begun circulating around is longtime film star George Clooney. In a recent interview with the BBC’s Andrew Marr, Clooney was asked if he would ever consider dipping his toe in the realm of politics like some of his contemporaries. Clooney, however, said he wasn’t interested, and made reasoning rather concise: “because I would actually like to have a nice life.”

“I turned 60 this year and I had a conversation with my wife … and I said we have to think of these as the halcyon years,” Clooney explained, adding that he’d like to use these years on things he finds fun and enriching.

“But In 20 years, I will be 80 and that’s a real number,” Clooney continued. “Doesn’t matter how much you work out, doesn’t matter what you eat. You’re 80 and so I said we have to make sure we enjoy and live these years in the best possible way.”

While they were on the subject, Clooney was also asked about his interactions with Trump prior to his stint in office. According to Clooney, Trump used to be “just this knucklehead.”

“I knew him before he was a president,” Clooney said. “He was just a guy who was chasing girls. Every time you went out he’d be like, ‘What’s the name of that girl?’ That’s all he was.”
