Getty accuses Stability AI of using its images without proper permission.
With the rise of AI tools for creating art and images on the internet, ethical and legal concerns have surfaced. These issues have now escalated to a legal battle.
This week, Getty Images, a major stock image provider, filed a lawsuit against Stability AI, the developers of the popular AI image generation tool known as Stable Diffusion. Getty claims that Stability AI utilized millions of Getty Images without obtaining the necessary licenses.
According to Getty, they have licensed their images to technology innovators to train AI systems with respect to intellectual property rights. Getty alleges that Stability AI did not seek such a license and instead used Getty Images for their commercial interests without permission.

The exact amount of damages Getty is seeking from Stability AI has not been disclosed. Stability AI stated that they are surprised to hear about the complaint through the media and are waiting for official documentation.
“We are taking this matter seriously and find it unusual that we learned about the legal action through the press. We have not received any formal documents yet. Once we do, we will respond accordingly,” said a spokesperson for Stability AI to CNN.
