In a surprising discovery last year, New Zealand farmers Colin and Donna Craig-Brown stumbled upon a massive 17.4-pound “potato” in their field. They affectionately named this unusual find “Doug” and eagerly sought to secure a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for the world’s heaviest potato.
Recently, they received unexpected news from Guinness World Records after a DNA test revealed that Doug was not a potato as they had believed. Instead, the test identified Doug as a “tuber of a type of gourd,” a revelation that left the couple perplexed.
Despite Doug’s gourd classification, both in appearance and taste, the Craig-Browns expressed bewilderment as to how a gourd ended up masquerading as a potato in their garden. They speculated about the possibility of crossbreeding during the growth of hybridized cucumbers on their farm, leading to the mysterious presence of Doug.
Amidst the confusion, the couple continues to care for Doug diligently. Mr. Craig-Brown remarked on Doug’s resilience, stating, “He’s a pretty cool character, aye. He’s pretty happy sitting there in the cryogenic storage facility that we’ve got here on the farm — the deep freezer. He’s not fazed at all.”
