Google’s commercial air delivery service is now available in Canberra, Australia. Wing, a subsidiary of Google’s parent company Alphabet, has started delivering coffee, medicines, food, and other products to a select group of customers. The collaboration with local businesses allows Wing to transport small household items to customers residing in the northern areas of Crace, Franklin, and Palmerston.

Wing Medium, in a press release, stated, “Our service enables customers to order various items like fresh food, hot coffee, or over-the-counter pharmacy items using our mobile app and have them delivered directly to their homes by drones within minutes.” The company plans to expand the service to neighboring areas in the coming months.

The Civilian Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has approved Wing’s application to operate a drone delivery service after carefully evaluating their operational plans and safety record for several months. Despite some complaints from residents about the noise generated by the drones during delivery, CASA, which has allowed Wing to test the service since 2014, concluded that the drones do not pose a risk to other aircraft or residents.

In order to ensure a smooth transition for residents, Wing plans to set up community information kiosks and hold delivery demonstrations in the areas where the service is being offered. CASA has required Wing drones to avoid main roads and limit deliveries to daytime hours as part of their policy to minimize disruptions for locals.

During a trial period spanning over 18 months, Wing’s drones completed over 3,000 deliveries to customers in Bonython, Fernleigh Park, and Royalla communities before the official launch of the service. This trial period also saw residents outside Canberra launching the Bonython Against Drones campaign to express their concerns about noise disturbance caused by the drones.

The campaign stated on their website, “When they do a delivery drop, they hover over the site and it sounds like an extremely loud, squealing vacuum cleaner.”

In response to the complaints, CASA instructed Wing to develop quieter drones for deliveries. The Australian aviation authority also specified that deliveries should only take place on weekdays between 7:00 am and 8:00 pm.

Wing complied with these directives and stated, “The feedback we have received during the trials has been valuable, helping us refine our operations to better meet the needs and expectations of the communities in which we operate.”

Local businesses, including Bakers Delight, Capital Chemist, Jasper + Myrtle, Kickstart Expresso, Guzman Y Gomez, and Drummond Golf, have partnered with Wing for this service. Wing also expressed its willingness to form partnerships with more companies in the future, especially those looking to serve customers in a faster, safer, and more sustainable manner.
