Guillermo del Toro Emphasizes the Significance of Animation as a Creative Platform

Post the release of Pinocchio, del Toro highlights that animation is not just limited to children.

In recent weeks, renowned filmmaker Guillermo del Toro showcased his interpretation of the timeless tale of Pinocchio on Netflix. The stop-motion animated movie quickly rose to the top of Netflix’s rankings, garnering critical praise for its fresh approach to the classic narrative.

At a recent screening of the film in Toronto, del Toro emphasized the significance of animation as a creative medium in filmmaking and highlighted that it’s not exclusively for children’s entertainment.

Expressing his views, del Toro stated, “I didn’t intend it for kids. I believe animation is not just a genre tailored for kids; it’s a platform that can delve into themes of beauty, sadness, and tragedy.”

Del Toro also commented on the necessity of films targeted at children for the economic sustainability of the medium but criticized many of them as mere “babysitting” movies, serving as a form of entertainment that allows parents to distract their children for a while.

He expressed, “They switch them on and allow the kids to be unsupervised because these films have been homogenized and sanitized, providing an easy solution for parents.”

Del Toro concluded by stressing the importance of exposing children to varying life themes rather than shielding them from reality, stating, “If you overly sanitize the world for children, you are hindering their growth… Conversations about life and death need to happen, whether it’s through a movie or any other means. Children can comprehend and benefit from such discussions, and the art form of animation requires it.”
