Henry Cavill Departing ‘The Witcher’ After Three Seasons

Liam Hemsworth will take up the starring role of Geralt of Rivia.

Netflix’s The Witcher, a live-action adaptation of the series of books of the same name, also known for its popular video game series, has proven to be a breakout success for the platform. The show, starring Henry Cavill as hardened monster hunter Geraly of Rivia, has successfully run for three seasons and maintained a generally healthy viewerbase. The show has already been greenlit for a fourth season, but apparently this next season will feature a major change.

Cavill announced on his Instagram on Friday that he has officially retired from the role of Geralt in order to pursue other projects. “My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4.”

In Cavill’s place for the fourth season will be actor Liam Hemsworth, best known for his work in the Hunger Games films. “As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men,” Cavill wrote.

On his own Instagram, Hemsworth expressed excitement for the opportunity, saying he was “over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia.”

“Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure,” he wrote.
