A man dressed as Cookie Monster was recently seen at Santa Cruz Wharf.
Back in 2015, San Francisco faced a similar situation when a man, later identified as a 54-year-old named Adam Sandler (not the actor), roamed the streets in an Elmo costume from Sesame Street. He would ask for money from passersby and became aggressive towards those who refused. Eventually, he was banned from popular spots in San Francisco.
Lately, Sandler has reappeared in Santa Cruz Wharf, this time dressed as Cookie Monster. While he hasn’t committed any crimes, his troublesome behavior has caused concern among locals and authorities advise people to avoid interaction with him.
According to SCPD spokeswoman Joyce Blaschke, “We are receiving reports about his ‘creepy’ presence. Given his past actions, we recommend avoiding contact with him. Stay away from him if you see him.”

“In recent weeks you may have seen a man dressed up like the Cookie Monster in the Santa Cruz area including the Beach and Wharf areas. It is important to note he is not employed by, contracted by, or permitted by the City of Santa Cruz or any local business,” a spokesperson for the Wharf said in a public service announcement.
“He is exercising his First Amendment rights, however, if you have concerns about inappropriate behavior or him claiming to be hired by the City or a business, you should contact Santa Cruz Police immediately.”
