Mongolia is known for its barren landscapes and rich history. Here are some fascinating facts about Mongolia:
1. One-Quarter of Mongolians are Nomads
Out of the 3 million people living in Mongolia, 25 to 40 percent are nomadic herders. They travel across the country with their cattle and don’t tend to stick in one place.
2. Genghis Khan is Mongolia’s Founding Father
Genghis Khan, a legendary figure, united several nomadic tribes and established one of the largest empires in world history. In just 25 years, his armies conquered territories larger than the Roman conquests spanning four centuries.
3. Low Population Density
Mongolia is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. Its capital, Ulanbataar or Ulan-Bator, is one of the coldest and most isolated capital cities globally.
4. The Last Eagle Hunters
Mongolia is the only place where people hunt with Eagles. The Golden Eagle Festival is held annually to celebrate this age-old Kazakh tradition and bring together hunters and their eagles.
5. Mongolians Love Ice Cream
Despite the freezing temperatures in Mongolia (around -30 degrees Celsius or -22 degrees Fahrenheit), Mongolians have a fondness for ice cream. Vendors sell ice cream in paper boxes instead of using ice boxes.
6. The Bactrian Camel is Honored
The Thousand Camel Festival is an annual event that celebrates the two-humped Bactrian camel, which is native to Mongolia. The festival aims to raise awareness about the endangered Bactrian camel and the lifestyle of nomadic camel herders in Mongolia.
