The 2022 Grammy awards were held last night, shining the spotlight on well-known artists in today’s music industry such as Billie Eilish, Silk Sonic, Olivia Rodrigo, and more. Among the night’s big winners was Jon Batiste, who clinched an impressive five Grammy awards, including some of the most prestigious ones.
Having received 11 nominations, Batiste secured victories in categories like best American roots performance, best American roots song, best score soundtrack for visual media, and best music video for his song “Freedom.” His standout triumph, however, was winning album of the year for his work on We Are. This win not only adds to Batiste’s exceptional career but also marks a historic moment, as he is the first Black artist to claim this award since Herbie Hancock’s win for River: The Joni Letters in 2008.

In his acceptance speech, Batiste shared, “I just put my head down and work on the craft everyday … It’s more than entertainment for me, it’s a spiritual practice. Be you, that’s it.” He expressed that there is no absolute “best” song or album, adding that “it’s like a song or an album is made and it almost has a radar to find a person when they need it the most.”
