Lollapalooza to Run in Full in Chicago

Massive events like music festivals were obviously one of the first things to go when the pandemic started. A whole crowd of screaming fans, many shirtless, doesn’t exactly gel with general health and safety protocols. Even as cases decline and vaccinations increase, some events, like the recently cancelled Burning Man, still aren’t quite comfortable with going gung-ho. Other events, though, will stop at nothing to get things back on track, and one of those events is the classic music festival, Lollapalooza.

According to Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, the Lollapalooza music festival is set not only to run this summer, but run in full. No distancing, no masks, all music, and they’ve already got a fantastic lineup of musical acts: Foo Fighters, Post Malone, Tyler, the Creator and Miley Cyrus.

“Here in Chicago, the word ‘Lollapalooza’ has always been synonymous with summer, great music and four days of unforgettable fun — which made last year’s decision to postpone it all the more difficult,” Lightfoot said in a statement. “Now, less than a year later and armed with a vaccine that is safe, effective and widely available, we are able to bring back one of our city’s most iconic summer music festivals.”

It’s important to note, however, that while the event will be as high-octane and free-wheeling as always, there is one thing the organizers won’t compromise on: vaccinations. Anyone looking to attend the festival needs to be either fully vaccinated or provide concrete proof of a recent negative COVID-19 test. No proof of safety, no attendance, full stop.

“What’s up Chicago? I’ll see you this summer with my good friends, the Foo Fighters,” frontman Dave Grohl said in a promo video for the event.

Lollapalooza 2021 will run from July 29 to August 1. If you somehow still needed an incentive to get vaccinated (beyond, y’know, the obvious one), I can’t think of anything better.
