Recently, the release of the “Facebook Papers” has stirred controversy. This collection of documents, sourced from whistleblowers and the media, sheds light on Facebook’s internal practices, particularly its handling of hate speech and problematic content on the platform. The revelations have led to public outcry against Facebook, coinciding with the disclosure of their latest earnings.
During the earnings call, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, brushed off the allegations in the documentation as a deliberate attempt to tarnish the platform’s reputation. He stated, “Constructive criticism is valuable in helping us improve, but it appears that there is a concerted effort to cherry-pick leaked documents to distort the image of our company.” Zuckerberg emphasized that Facebook fosters an open culture that encourages dialogue and research to address various complex issues beyond their organization.
Addressing concerns about identifying and removing problematic content, Zuckerberg highlighted the effectiveness of their transparency reports in revealing the proportion of content acted upon by artificial intelligence (AI) systems compared to user reports. He mentioned, “For the majority of cases, over 90% of the content we take action on is primarily identified through our AI technology.”

However, Zuckerberg acknowledged the challenges of identifying problematic content across diverse languages and cultural contexts. He admitted that categories like hate speech pose greater difficulties due to Facebook operating in approximately 150 languages globally, each with its own cultural nuances.
Concluding the call, Zuckerberg expressed his pride in the team’s efforts, stating, “I recognize the intense scrutiny our actions face, and I want to commend the team and individuals involved for the strides they continue to make.”
