Marvel recently launched What If…? on Disney+, an animated series presenting various alternate realities of the Marvel Cinematic Universe arising from small twists in the original storyline. The initial episode features Peggy Carter assuming the role of Captain Carter instead of Steve Rogers, and teasers have showcased other intriguing scenarios like T’Challa as Star Lord and Spider-Man as the Sorcerer Supreme.
While Marvel has a long history of animated shows dating back to the 1960s, What If…? marks the first animated series directly connected to the MCU. If the show performs well, which seems likely, Marvel is gearing up to launch several more animated MCU projects.
According to What If…? executive producer Brad Winderbaum speaking to Variety, “We realized that there’s a lot of cool avenues you can explore with animation. Any project we create will need to be animated to tell the story. We’re not interested in just creating an animated show based on popular IP tied to upcoming movies. That’s not our approach.”

These upcoming shows will spotlight lesser-known characters and overlooked concepts within the MCU, as well as introduce storylines and characters from the vast Marvel comics universe that have yet to be explored.
Winderbaum elaborated, “All our animation projects will remain under Marvel Studios, produced by Kevin Feige, and share the same creative foundation as the rest of our content. The unfolding multiverse saga will reveal more in time.”
