The Miss Universe beauty pageant, which was postponed last year due to COVID-19, finally took place this year in Hollywood, Florida, with 74 contestants competing for the prestigious title. The event showcased a unique twist with many participants using their platform to highlight important social and political issues alongside their beauty. In the end, Andrea Meza, representing Mexico, emerged victorious as the 69th Miss Universe at the age of 26.
In a statement released by the Miss Universe Organization, Meza expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am so honored to have been selected among the 73 other amazing women I stood with tonight. It is a dream come true to wear the Miss Universe crown, and I hope to serve the world through my advocacy for equality in the year to come and beyond.”
During her final speech, Meza emphasized the evolving definition of beauty in today’s society, stating, “Nowadays beauty isn’t only the way we look. For me, beauty radiates not only in our spirit, but in our hearts and the way that we conduct ourselves. Never permit someone to tell you that you’re not valuable.”
Originally from Chihuahua City, Mexico, Meza’s professional background includes work as a model and make-up artist, complemented by a degree in software engineering. She is actively involved in advocating for gender equality through her work with the Municipal Institute for Women and serves as a tourism brand ambassador for her hometown.
As she assumes the philanthropic responsibilities of the Miss Universe title from the previous titleholder, Zozibini Tunzi, Meza will relocate to New York City to collaborate with the Miss Universe Organization.
