Last year’s Miss Universe beauty pageant was postponed due to COVID-19, but this year, 74 contestants from around the world finally graced the stage in Hollywood, Florida. The event had a non-traditional vibe, with several participants conveying protest and political messages alongside their traditional beauty presentations. Nonetheless, all contestants aimed to redefine beauty according to their own standards. In the end, the coveted title went to 26-year-old Andrea Meza, Miss Mexico, who emerged victorious among the rest.
“I am incredibly honored to stand alongside the 73 other remarkable women tonight,” Meza expressed in a statement released by the Miss Universe Organization. “Wearing the Miss Universe crown is a dream come true, and I aspire to advocate for equality throughout the upcoming year and beyond.”
In her final speech, Meza shared, “In a society that continues to progress, stereotypes have also advanced. Today, beauty transcends mere appearance. To me, beauty emanates from our spirit, hearts, and our conduct. Never allow anyone to undermine your worth.”
Hailing from Chihuahua City, Mexico, Meza’s professional background includes work as a model and makeup artist, complemented by a software engineering degree. Beyond her career pursuits, she actively advocates for the Municipal Institute for Women, an organization dedicated to combating gender-based violence. Moreover, she serves as a tourism ambassador for her hometown.
Meza will now undertake the philanthropic responsibilities associated with the Miss Universe title, following in the footsteps of the previous titleholder, Zozibini Tunzi, as she prepares to relocate to New York City to work closely with the Miss Universe Organization.
