Among the anime that have gained some level of mainstream recognition, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure stands out as either extremely popular or notably notorious, depending on who you ask. Since its inception in 1987, the original manga has continued to captivate audiences with its unique storylines, often leading fans to exclaim “JoJo reference!” at unexpected moments, thanks to its references to classic rock and rap musicians. While this may confuse newcomers, for those deeply immersed in the series (such as myself), it adds to the allure of this extraordinary saga filled with superhuman battles and intricate plots. The recent release of the sixth installment only adds to the excitement.
Today, Netflix debuted the initial 12 episodes of the anime adaptation of the sixth part of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure known as Stone Ocean. This segment follows Jolyne Cujoh, the estranged daughter of Jotaro Kujo, the protagonist from the third part. Falsely accused of a crime, Jolyne finds herself sentenced to 15 years in the Green Dolphin Street Prison in Florida. However, her imprisonment is not a mere coincidence but a complex scheme orchestrated by the long-standing series antagonist, Dio Brando. To survive, Jolyne must forge alliances within the prison while honing her newfound supernatural abilities.

Interestingly, in addition to the original Japanese voice track with English subtitles, Netflix has also released the English dub concurrently, a departure from the typical delayed release. Notable in the English cast is Kira Buckland, the voice of Jolyne, who previously portrayed supporting characters in earlier parts and is renowned for her work as a video game voice actress.
Expressing her excitement, Buckland shared on her personal Twitter, “For the past 8 years, I have hoped that this moment would one day come. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but… It is the biggest honor of my life to be the English voice of JOLYNE CUJOH in JOJO’S BIZARRE ADVENTURE: STONE OCEAN. My dream has finally come true.”
