An old joke often mentions selling a bridge to someone gullible, referring to a con man named George C. Parker who tricked people into “buying” the Brooklyn Bridge. In Akron, Ohio, residents were surprised to find the 58-foot bridge missing from Middlebury Run Park. The bridge had been removed for a wetlands restoration project but vanished from the open field where it was stored.
The Akron PD investigators noted that the bridge, made of polymer composite parts, could have been easily disassembled due to its bolted connections. Lt. Mike Miller mentioned that with the right equipment, dismantling the bridge wouldn’t have been difficult.
The police suspect that the stolen bridge or its components might be repurposed elsewhere by the thief since they have minimal recyclable value. Lt. Miller speculated that the bridge could be used for landscaping or other large-scale engineering projects.
The search for the missing 58-foot bridge is still ongoing.
