Meeting a celebrity on the street often sparks the desire to ask for their autograph, a cherished proof of the encounter. However, for Sir Paul McCartney, the legendary former Beatles bassist, this tradition seems outdated.
In an interview with Reader’s Digest, as reported by Contact Music, McCartney revealed his decision to stop signing autographs for fans, questioning the necessity of it. He expressed his view, saying, “It always struck me as a bit strange, ‘here, can I write your name down on the back of this till receipt please?’ Why? We both know who I am.”
Additionally, McCartney shared his preference for connecting with fans on a more personal level rather than taking selfies. He emphasized the value in engaging in conversations and sharing stories instead of capturing awkward photos. “What you’ve usually got is a ropey photo with a poor backdrop and me looking a bit miserable. Let’s chat, let’s exchange stories,” he mentioned.

Following McCartney, in a famous declaration, another former Beatle, Ringo Starr, announced in 2008 that he would cease signing autographs due to the rampant appearance of his signatures on internet auction sites. Starr firmly stated, “I’m warning you with peace and love I have too much to do. So no more fan mail, thank you, thank you, and no objects to be signed, nothing.”
