If you remember the iconic theme song of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which is hard to forget, you’ll recall that Will was sent to Bel-Air after a conflict with a gang in Philadelphia. While the original series portrayed this humorously, in reality, such an event would be troubling for a family and could have serious consequences. What if Will’s family took this incident more seriously?
Today, Peacock, the streaming service from NBC, has released the first trailer for Bel-Air, a reinterpretation of The Fresh Prince that explores the challenges faced by a young Will Smith in a more serious and dramatic way. Set in the present day, the show addresses contemporary societal issues and aims to deliver a poignant message.
“You can have a Black family facing struggles, but their love for each other is never in question — and there can be authentic conflicts without relying on sensationalism or darkness,” shared co-showrunner Rasheed Newson with Entertainment Weekly. “We are addressing the current moment, much like the original series did. Young viewers will see reflections of their own generational clashes with parents in characters like Will, Carlton, and Hilary. Each generation must redefine the norms.”

Portraying the role of Will Smith, Jabari Banks steps into one of his first major acting roles after completing his studies. While following in the footsteps of the real Will Smith is no small feat, the team has faith that Banks can rise to the occasion.
“His charisma and energy exuded from him,” stated co-showrunner T.J. Brady. “After watching the pilot, everyone has agreed that ‘You guys discovered a star.'”
Bel-Air will debut on Peacock on February 13, 2022.
