Pepsi Introduces Nitrogen-Infused Flavor | The Daily Wobble

Never one to be outdone by Coca-Cola, who recently released their mysterious new Coke Starlight flavor, Pepsi has announced a new product of their own, Nitro Pepsi. This isn’t just your everyday new flavor of Pepsi, however. Nitro Pepsi is fundamentally different from the regular stuff on a composition level.

Rather than being carbonated with carbon like regular Pepsi, Nitro Pepsi is carbonated with nitrogen. This makes its fizz a little less overpowering and gives the drink a smooth, foamy texture. This is accomplished thanks to a “widget” at the bottom of the new can that releases encapsulated nitrogen when the can is popped. It’s the same tech used in cans of Guinness beer, and Nitro Pepsi is said to have a similar, creamy profile to those kinds of drinks. Pepsi even recommends serving the drink in the same way as a stout beer by chilling the can and pouring it into a tall glass without ice.

“While soda has been a beverage of choice for so many consumers over the past century, some people still cite heavy carbonation as a barrier to enjoying an ice-cold cola,” said Todd Kaplan, Pepsi’s vice president of marketing, in a press release. He boasted that Nitro is a “huge leap forward for the cola category and will redefine cola for years to come.”

Nitro Pepsi will hit supermarket shelves in single cans and four-packs starting on March 28.
