Power Outage Affects Thousands of Residents in Austin, Texas

Full power restoration may take up to a week.

An intense ice storm hit Texas over the weekend, causing significant damage to power lines across the state. As a result, many residents were left without electricity in the freezing weather.

In Austin, the state capital, more than 150,000 individuals lost power. Austin Energy crew worked tirelessly to restore most of the system, though approximately 30,000 customers are still without electricity and may remain so for up to a week.

“We are now focusing on the most complicated & time-consuming restoration efforts. Incoming wind & rain will pose additional challenges,” Austin Energy announced in a tweet. “Based on current information, we expect to restore power to nearly all remaining customers by Sunday, Feb. 12.”

Although the storm has passed, the city continues to face strong winds, hindering the repair of power lines. Further challenges arise as there is a risk of trees or branches falling on already fixed lines.

“I’m sorry for the prolonged outage,” stated Austin Energy General Manager Jackie Sargent during a Sunday press conference. Sargent mentioned that the company might not offer refunds for the power outage period due to the extensive damage, though the issue is still being deliberated.
