‘Rick and Morty’ Season 5 to Air in June

I’m admittedly no expert on how studios and networks go about deciding on air schedules for their shows, but I would assume there’s at least some manner of consistency to it all. Most shows, upon receiving a green light for another season, either continue right into it or offer a specified future date for it to get started. Rick and Morty is not one of those shows. I don’t know how or why, but the mad lads behind that show always seem to be flying by the seat of their pants. One moment, we’re all in limbo, wondering if there’ll even be another season, and the next, we have a set date.

Adult Swim announced today that Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland’s time and space-defying animated comedy will be returning to TV for its fifth season starting Sunday, June 20 at 11:00 PM eastern time. This particular day will also be deemed “Rick and Morty Day” by the network, and will be, according to a press release from the network, “an out of this world celebration with sneak peeks, behind the scenes footage and special surprises across TV, digital and social, kicking off the global premieres of the new season.”

As for the season itself, judging from the new trailer, it’ll be the usual mash-up of irreverent, occasionally gross humor, multiversal shenanigans, and awkward family moments. Rick and Morty is a fairly episodic show by nature, with each episode mostly being self-contained, though there are definitely still some plot threads from the previous season that need to be wrapped up. Considering how they handled that in previous seasons, it probably won’t take more than one episode to get things back to status quo, two tops.
