Robert Pattinson Spent Months Physically Preparing for ‘The Batman’

The Batman, the newest film adaptation of the classic DC comics superhero, has hit theaters, and its star, Robert Pattinson, spends a weirdly high amount of time in the film without a shirt on. It’s anyone’s guess as to why it was written like that, though he does look excellent regardless. Apparently, though, the promise of shirtless scenes was a major motivator for Pattinson to get his diet under super-maximum strictness.

“I had about three months before the movie started, and then you’re working out before and after work all the time,” Pattinson told People magazine at the film’s premiere. “You just cut down and cut down and cut down before the couple of scenes with your shirt off, and you’re counting sips of water.”

Even when he’s not topless, Pattinson also cuts an impressive figure in the iconic cowl of Batman, and apparently just wearing that mask went a long way toward boosting his confidence.

“It’s funny because you read the script and you spend loads of time trying to figure out, ‘How can I play this character who does these sort of audacious acts?’ And the closer I got to the shoot I got more and more paranoid — you know, it feels ridiculous when you’re just sitting at home in a T-shirt — and then you put it on,” Pattinson said about the costume. “It’s got an elemental power to it.”

When you’re Batman, “people react to you differently,” according to Pattinson. It made him feel as though putting on the cowl was akin to putting on a crown.
