The American Rescue Plan, a new economic stimulus package by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, is making its way to the United States Senate. If approved, individuals below a certain income threshold will receive a $1,400 third stimulus payment. Despite this relief, many Americans are still struggling due to the ongoing pandemic. A group of senators believes that sporadic one-time payments are insufficient.
In a letter addressed to President Biden, eleven Democratic senators have urged for the inclusion of recurring direct payments in the evolving economic recovery plan.
“This crisis persists, and families need assurance that they can afford necessities. Families shouldn’t have to rely on unpredictable legislative schedules and temporary fixes,” the letter stated.

Following the enactment of the American Rescue Plan, President Biden is anticipated to focus on the economic recovery plan. The primary objective is to assist the U.S. economy in recovering from the pandemic’s extensive impact, particularly in infrastructure and manufacturing sectors. The current expansion of jobless benefits is set to expire mid-March, with an extension only until August if the rescue plan passes. Despite vaccination efforts, the timeline for a return to normalcy remains uncertain, possibly prolonging the economic challenges.
The senators have not specified the frequency or amounts of the proposed ongoing payments.
