Senate Democrats Push for Recurring Stimulus Checks

The American Rescue Plan, the new economic stimulus package penned by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, is currently on its way to the United States Senate. If it can get a majority vote, then among other benefits to the American people, everyone below a certain income level will be receiving a third stimulus payment of $1,400. However, while this money will be helpful, many Americans are still in dire straits as the pandemic continues, and in the opinion of a group of senators, one payment every once in a while isn’t going to cut it.

In a letter sent to President Biden today, a group of eleven Democratic senators have requested the implementation of recurring direct payments, as well as enhanced and extended jobless benefits in the economic recovery plan currently being developed.

“This crisis is far from over, and families deserve certainty that they can put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads,” the letter read. “Families should not be at the mercy of constantly-shifting legislative timelines and ad hoc solutions.”

Biden is expected to center his focus on the economic recovery plan after the American Rescue Plan has been successfully passed and signed into law. The primary goal of the plan is to help the American economy regain its footing from the sizable damage caused by the pandemic, with emphasis on infrastructure and manufacturing. The current jobless benefit expansion will expire on March 14 unless the American Rescue Plan can get successfully signed in, though this will only extend the benefits until August. While vaccination efforts are ramping up around the country, it still isn’t known when exactly the pandemic will have calmed to the point that we can return to some semblance of normal, which means the job market could still be in bad shape at that point.

The senators have not specified how frequently they’d want these hypothetical payments to be, nor for how much.
