In response to a surge in COVID-19 cases, the Chinese government has escalated the lockdown measures in Shanghai. The initial strategy involved phased lockdowns in different parts of the city for testing and containment purposes. However, due to the continuous increase in case numbers, authorities have decided to extend the lockdown to cover the entire city at once.
Recent reports indicate that Shanghai has been recording over 10,000 new cases daily, with a total of more than 73,000 confirmed cases since March. While the numbers may seem relatively low compared to other countries, China’s commitment to a zero-COVID policy requires stringent measures, including a city-wide lockdown until the situation is under control. To support the efforts, around 38,000 medical professionals from other regions have been mobilized to assist in testing, tracing, and isolation efforts, marking one of the largest medical operations since the initial outbreak in Wuhan in 2020.
