Snapchat Releasing Desktop Version

Since its initial launch back in 2011, social media platform Snapchat has only been available for use on mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. This is despite the fact that every other major social platform offers both desktop and mobile availability. In spite of that, Snapchat managed to carve out a niche for itself targeting younger users who use phones more than desktop computers. Soon, though, that will change.

Snap announced today that Snapchat will soon be available for use on desktops through the use of the Snapchat for Web. This version of the service would allow users to make video calls and send messages using their Snapchat profile. The web app will be geared more toward messaging and communication, and will not feature full integration with the Snapchat Stories feature for sharing posts. Following its launch, more features will be added later, such as the ability to use Lenses during video calls.

The first rollout of this new feature will only be available to regular users in Australia and New Zealand, as well as premium Snapchat+ users in the US, UK, and Canada. Snapchat for Web will only be available on Google Chrome to start, but Snap is planning on bringing support for it to other browsers in the future.
