Some argue about the originality of art, while others believe it can be derivative or that art has no rules. When it comes to music, determining if songs are stolen or simply inspired by others can be difficult. However, songs sharing a title are not a new phenomenon. Here are a few examples we found:
“If I Can’t Have You”
Yvonne Elliman (1977)/Shawn Mendes (2019)
Yvonne Elliman is known for her disco hit from 1977 — “If I Can’t Have You.” Decades later, Shawn Mendes, a popular name in pop music, released his own song with the same title. While the musicality differs, the sentiment remains the same.
“I Want You Back”
Jackson 5 (1969)/*NSYNC (1997)
In 1969, the Jackson 5 released their smash hit, “I Want You Back”, which made a comeback as part of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” soundtrack. Nearly thirty years later, *NSYNC released a single of the same name. The song continues to be popular even today.
“Señorita”
Justin Timberlake (2002)/Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello (2019)
When Justin Timberlake released “Señorita” in 2002, it was a huge hit, known for its Latin beats and featuring Pharrell Williams. In 2019, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello released a different song with the same title, which gained massive popularity.
