Due to the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic, people are starting to once again become reluctant to sit in a movie theater in close proximity of others for two hours. If people are going to come to the theaters to see a movie, it has to be an absolute home-run, can’t miss film. Somewhat unsurprisingly, that film stars everyone’s favorite wall-crawler, Spider-Man.

The box office for the release weekend of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the third in an MCU-based trilogy of films revolving around Peter Parker, better known as the amazing Spider-Man, has set not only a pandemic-era record, but a full-on theater record. In its first weekend in theaters, No Way Home turned a domestic box office profit of over $260 million. Not only does this surpass Sony’s expectations for the film by a good $7 million, it’s also stolen the spot of second-highest domestic box office in theater history from 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. The only movie in history to turn a higher opening weekend profit is Avengers: Endgame with its $357.1 million opening.

“At every turn, this movie just keeps swinging above expectations,” Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at, told CNBC. “It’s a remarkable achievement for any time and, even more so, during the pandemic.”

“Even with omicron concerns in play right now, there is a clear runway for a strong run through the holidays pending any extreme developments,” Robbins added. “Word of mouth is through the roof. Moviegoers are embracing this event film and the theatrical experience driving it.”
