Spotify Cancels Production of Car Thing

Back in February, after nearly a year of anticipation and hyping, Spotify released the Car Thing, a car-mounted device designed to sync with a user’s smartphone Spotify app and allow them to quickly and conveniently cycle songs. The device was given the name “Car Thing” based on what the developers assumed everyone would refer to it as. Surprisingly, however, after only five months on the market, it seems nobody will be referring to the Car Thing by anything.

During the announcement of its quarterly earnings today, Spotify revealed that they would be halting production of Car Thing units. The device is still available for sale on Spotify’s website, but it has been marked down to about half of its usual price. Presumably, once these units sell out, Spotify will delist the device from their site.

“The goal of Spotify’s Car Thing exploration was to better understand in-car listening, and bring audio to a wider range of users and vehicles,” a Spotify spokesperson told TechCrunch. “Based on several factors, including product demand and supply chain issues, we have decided to stop further production of Car Thing units. Existing devices will perform as intended. This initiative has unlocked helpful learnings, and we remain focused on the car as an important place for audio.”
