Super Bowl Halftime Features Classic Rappers

Yesterday was Super Bowl LVI, an all-out game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California. It was a fantastic game for those who enjoy watching football, but for those who don’t, the big draw was the halftime show, and based on public reception, this year’s show was one of the best.

This year’s halftime show featured performances of some of the most prominent rap artists in modern music history, including, but not limited to, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre, and a surprise appearance by 50 Cent. The lineup was a perfect intersection of Los Angeles native pride, Black artist celebration, and millennial nostalgia. The set for the performance also featured several staples of California’s city of Compton, a major focal point of rap culture.

Millennial and Gen X viewers absolutely loved the performance, though some have joked that getting a Super Bowl Halftime show aimed at them was a sign they’re getting old. “Everybody born between 1985 and 1995 saw the Super Bowl halftime show lineup and was like ‘sweet, instead of doing a show for old people like the Rolling Stones or Paul McCartney or The Who they did one for us young people.’ and then 10 seconds later it hit us,” wrote The Ringer’s Rodger Sherman on his Twitter.
