Recently, the demand for trading cards, especially Pokémon cards, has surged leading to a spike in their value. Scalpers, collectors, and enthusiasts have been actively buying Pokémon cards along with cards from other sports like baseball, basketball, and football. Events like the Pokémon card promotion at McDonald’s have attracted scalpers trying to snag rare cards and make a profit. The situation has gotten out of hand, with incidents of theft and violence occurring. For example, a man in Japan once burgled a trading card store in a daring fashion. In another alarming case, a dispute over cards at a Target store in Wisconsin resulted in one man brandishing a gun, though thankfully no one was hurt.

Following this concerning event, Target has taken a stand. Starting May 14, Target has announced that all Pokémon, MLB, NFL, and NBA trading cards will be removed from physical store shelves until further notice.

Explaining their decision, a Target representative told Bleeding Cool, “The safety of our guests and our team is our top priority. Out of caution, we have chosen to temporarily halt the sale of MLB, NFL, NBA, and Pokémon trading cards in our stores, effective May 14. Customers can still purchase these cards online at”

Prior to the gun incident, Target had already been taking measures to address the card frenzy, including limiting the number of packs one person could purchase and warning against camping outside stores for cards. While some hobbyists may be disappointed by the decision to stop in-store sales, they also understand Target’s concerns amidst the ongoing scalping issues.
