Today, Tesla, the electric vehicle manufacturer, has issued a voluntary recall of around 500,000 Tesla Model 3 and Model S vehicles manufactured between 2017 and 2020. The company has identified a potential safety issue in both vehicle models, with an estimated impact on approximately 1% of Model 3s and 14% of Model S vehicles.
According to the recall submission to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, both vehicle models have unique issues. Tesla found a possible weakness in the cables connecting the rearview camera to the rest of the vehicle in Model 3s. This weakness could result from the cables being frayed by the trunk’s opening and closing, potentially causing the rear camera to malfunction. On the other hand, Model S vehicles have a more critical problem concerning their front trunks. There is a flaw in the latch mechanism that may prevent the trunk from closing securely. If the latch fails while in motion, it could lead to the front trunk opening unexpectedly, obstructing the driver’s view.

Tesla is advising all Model 3 and Model S owners to take their vehicles to the nearest dealer for necessary repairs. For Model 3 vehicles, new and stronger cable harnesses will be installed on the rear camera at no additional cost. As for the Model S, Tesla believes the issue can be resolved by repositioning the latch, which will also be done free of charge.
