Texas Woman Attempts to Buy a Child from his Mother at Walmart

As one of the largest big-box retailer chains in the country, it’s a fair assumption that Walmart would carry just about anything you could want at a reasonable price. Of course, there’s an unspoken assumption there that “anything” only includes consumer goods like peanut butter or something. On the other hand, if you go to Walmart with the intent of purchasing a real human child, well, you’re probably gonna be disappointed. And then arrested.

Recently, an anonymous woman was shopping at a Walmart in Texas with her young son in tow. According to an affidavit obtained by local police, she was at the self-checkout machine when another woman, who has been identified as 49-year-old Crockett resident Rebecca Lanette Taylor, approached her and commented on his hair and eyes. This was then followed by her asking the mother how much she’d accept for him in payment. The mother attempted to laugh it off, rightfully assuming Taylor was just joking, but Taylor insisted, claiming she had $250,000 in her car and would pay that for the child.

The mother told Taylor her son was not for sale and attempted to leave the store, but Taylor followed them, insisting that she sell her the child. “Taylor began screaming at the mom, saying if she wouldn’t take $250,000 for him, then she would give her $500,000 because she wanted him and she was going to take him,” the affidavit, which was obtained by local TV station KETK-TV, reads.

The mother locked herself and her son inside their car and waited until Taylor left, then called the police. A warrant was issued for Taylor’s arrested, and she was apprehended shortly after. Taylor is now being held in Houston County Jail on a $50,000 bond for attempted purchase of a child, which is a third-degree felony.
