With Hollywood studios always considering using AI to assist in movie-making, we feel it’s necessary to highlight some of the fictional artificial intelligences that have graced our screens over the years. These robots range from adorable to terrifying.
R2-D2
Has there ever been a more faithful droid than R2-D2? First introduced in 1977, this small robot has accompanied both Luke Skywalker in the original “Star Wars” trilogy and his father Anakin in the prequels. In fact, R2 is one of the few characters to appear in all three trilogies of “a Galaxy far, far away”!
Wall-E
Pixar struck gold when they introduced Wall-E to audiences. Waste Allocation Load Lifter: Earth Class, or Wall-E for short, is a robot with a heart of gold and captured the hearts of millions when his movie was released in 2008.
T-800
We dare say that the T-800 is the most chilling robot ever depicted on the silver screen. This deadly machine, disguised as Arnold Schwarzenegger, appears in nearly every installment of “The Terminator” franchise. But beneath that human-like facade, lies something far more terrifying.
The Iron Giant
The story of “The Iron Giant” is quite remarkable. It follows the tale of a young boy during the Cold War who befriends a colossal alien robot that crash-landed on Earth. Did you know that Vin Diesel provided the voice for the titular Iron Giant in the 1999 film? No? Neither did we!
C-3PO
We’re stretching the rules a bit here since R2-D2 and his sidekick C-3PO are almost always seen together, side by side, in the “Star Wars” movies. Unlike R2, “Threepio” is a protocol droid fluent in virtually every language and is capable of communicating with others on a relatively human level.
