The recent premiere of The Last of Us on HBO Max became the second-largest debut for HBO in the past ten years.
Over the weekend, The Last of Us made its debut on HBO Max, a series adaptation of the popular video game featuring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie. The storyline follows their journey through a post-apocalyptic United States, 20 years after a devastating viral outbreak has decimated civilization.
The show was a significant success for HBO, attracting 4.7 million viewers for its premiere on HBO Max and the traditional HBO TV network. This marks the second-largest debut for a show on HBO since the introduction of Boardwalk Empire in 2010, trailing behind last year’s House of the Dragon, which garnered 9.986 million viewers.
Executive producers Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann expressed their happiness with the warm reception of the show by both existing fans and newcomers. They aimed to create the best possible adaptation of the beloved story to reach a broad audience.
