Timing is everything
The key to experiencing Caño Cristales’ vibrant rainbow colors is timing. The river blooms during the wet and dry season, which occurs between July and October. This natural spectacle is truly worth experiencing, and it’s advisable to check with the locals for the best time to witness this breathtaking view during your trip to Colombia.
It’s more than just a river
Caño Cristales is famous for its once-a-year rainbow colors, but Colombia is also home to many other natural attractions and unique experiences. The country is abundant with lush green beauty, featuring numerous natural pools and waterfalls. La Macarena National Park is located next to Caño Cristales and offers opportunities to explore exotic fauna and flora. Additionally, a trip down the river Guayabero is recommended to fully appreciate Colombia’s natural beauty.
Plan to spend at least three to four days visiting Caño Cristales. You can start your journey from either Villavicencio or Bogota. If you choose to travel from Villavicencio, you can take a DC3 plane or a small Cessna aircraft to La Macarena. From Bogota, you will need to board a charter flight to La Macarena. Day 3: La Macarena – Caño Cristales
