The Weeknd is requesting the same compensation that was initially promised to Kanye West.
Kanye West recently declared that he would not be performing at this year’s Coachella music festival, which is set to take place later this month. Since Ye was one of the festival’s main acts, the organizers needed to find a replacement quickly. They revealed earlier this week that The Weeknd would step in to fill Ye’s slot on April 17. However, this change has led to disagreements between the involved parties, potentially jeopardizing the deal.

Originally, Kanye West was set to perform at Coachella for $8 million, plus an additional $500,000. However, according to a report by Page Six, the event organizers were planning to compensate The Weeknd significantly less and retain the remaining money.
“The Weeknd stepped in last minute to fill Kanye’s slot. However, Phil Anschutz [the owner of Coachella Festival through AEG Live] intended to keep Kanye’s payment and offer The Weeknd much less, just a few million, with the festival keeping the rest,” a source told Page Six.
This payment disparity led to a conflict with The Weeknd, who insisted on receiving the same fee promised to Kanye or else he would withdraw from the performance.

“Even after Coachella announced the revised lineup on Wednesday, there was no agreement in place for The Weeknd, who warned that he would withdraw at a moment’s notice if he didn’t receive the same deal as Kanye,” the source revealed.
“Ultimately, on Wednesday, faced with the risk of losing a second headline act from Coachella at the last minute, Anschutz’s company gave in and agreed to pay The Weeknd the same amount.”
